The Del Oro High boys 4x400-meter relay team capped its spectacular season with one last record-breaking performance in prime time.
The Golden Eagles placed seventh in Saturday night’s finale at the CIF State Championships in Clovis. But the real show came one night earlier.
On Friday, the Golden Eagles broke their own school record for the third time this season. Del Oro raced to a time of 3:17.71 and won its heat. The Eagles were the third seed for Saturday’s final.
Del Oro was seventh in 3:18.44. Kenny Andri, Kai Von Alvenslaben, Blake Covey and Casey Wheeler competed.
Del Oro's girls 4x400 relay team also notched a new school record. The Eagles placed sixth in their heat Friday with a time of 3:57.29, but did not advance to the finals.
Bear River junior Kendal Nielsen missed the finals in her two events at state. She cleared 17 feet, 7 inches and placed 17th overall in the long jump. In the triple jump, Nielsen had a mark of 36-8.5 to place 18th overall.
In the girls pole vault, Del Oro senior Vicki Warner just missed out on the finals. She cleared 11-3 and tied for 13th.
Del Oro junior Brie Simmons raced to seventh place in her preliminary heat in the 100 hurdles Friday with a time of 14.73.
Eagles’ junior Wheeler also competed in the 300 hurdles, clocking in at 39.21 to place sixth in his heat of qualifying Friday. He did not advance to the finals.
