Del Oro soccer rallies for tie

The Del Oro High soccer team rallied from a halftime deficit and played to a 2-2 tie with host Oakmont Tuesday afternoon. After the Vikings scored goals at the 17- and 35-minute marks of the first half, the Golden Eagles answered with two of their own early in the second half. In the third minute, Kolby Mitnick dribbled past a defender and beat the keeper with a shot at near post. Five minutes later, Casey Meuser made a penalty kick after an Oakmont hand ball in front of the goal. Goalkeeper Alec Lyons had some big saves down the stretch. The Eagles (2-4-2, 0-1-1 Sierra Foothill League) travel to Woodcreek for a game under the lights Thursday night. Girls Tennis The Del Oro High girls tennis squad picked up its first Sierra Foothill League victory of the fall Tuesday, routing Oakmont 8-1 in Roseville. The Golden Eagles didn’t surrender a single game to the Vikings in the to four singles matches. Brynn Backarach, Hailey Shaban, Aubrey Nelson and Kristen Lehmann won in shutout sets. Ellen Watson won 6-1, 6-2 and Danielle Walker cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. In doubles play, Kimmy Hibbert and Marina Hansen took their No. 1 match 6-4, 6-1. Emily Sizmemore and Brenna McNabb won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. Del Oro (2-4 overall, 1-1 SFL) will play at Woodcreek Thursday. Girls Golf Hannah Brown shot a 51 to lead Bear River, but it wasn’t enough to carry the Bruins to victory as they fell to Lincoln 262-281 at Turkey Creek Golf Club Tuesday afternoon. Fighting Zebras sophomore Ji Sooyoo fired a 9-over-par 45 to earn medallist honors. Lucy Corippo was right behind Brown with a 52 for Bear River, followed by Stephanie Wong (56), Emilie Yonan (57) and Kenzie Caper (65). The Bruins (0-2 Pioneer Valley League) take on Whitney today. Girls Water Polo Goalkeeper Brittany Tyra hustled for 15 saves, but it wasn’t enough as the Woodcreek High girls water polo team topped Baer River 6-1 Tuesday in Roseville. Shelby Quist scored the Bruins’ lone goal while Alyssa Boch fired five shots at the Timberwolves’ net. Woodcreek edged Bear River 9-8 in junior varsity action. Beth Nelson had three goals, Andrea Bock scored two and Haley Jungers, Cindy Solomon and Becca Volek added goals in the loss for the Bruins. Del Oro 10, Oakmont 4 at Loomis — Ashley Brown and Sarah Mekebri each scores three times as the Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 in the Sierra Foothill League. Megan Craig, Natalie Johnson, Hannah Phippin and Courtney Weddle added goals for Del Oro, while goalkeeper Sam Toddhunter finished with 11 saves. The Eagles travel to Nevada Union Thursday before competing at a tournament at Sierra College over the weekend.
