Don’t downplay effects of cold

It is most grievous to read about another river accident (Journal, May 17). In my prime some time ago now, 100 pushups, 50 chin-ups, endurance runner/bicycler (in other words, in top condition), I stood in the visitors’ overlook at Yellowstone Falls in the cold fall and without my knowing it, hypothermia set in on my limbs. I wasn’t even aware that my numbed limbs would not obey my head telling me to move away from the cold spray! My wife had to carry/walk me back to our car. Let me scream at the top of my lungs — “You won’t know when your body is ‘over the edge’!” GEORGE LASATER, Auburn
