The E.V. Cain Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team joined the eighth grade squad as champions of the Foothill Intermediate Schools Athletic League last week. The seventh grade Wildcats capped an undefeated run through the FISAL with a 51-33 win over Cavitt in the championship game. Julia Camillucci led E.V. Cain with 14 points in the title game. Raven Lewis hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 11 while Grace Schoenhoff added nine. Schoenhoff helped hold the league’s leading scorer to 12 points — 14 below her season average. “Our championship was a team effort and everyone contributed to the win,” coach Norm Schoenhoff said in an e-mail. “It was a great group of young ladies that worked very hard all season both in practice and in the games.” Capri Pelle, Emily Giles and Bethany Thornton were major contributors for the Wildcats along with Lewis, Camillucci and Grace Schoenhoff. E.V. Cain’s 11-0 run through league play included a dramatic overtime win over Silverado in which Pelle hit two free throws in the closing seconds and Lewis came up with two clutch 3-pointers. The Wildcats thrived with their pressing, up-tempo style of play, using the theme, “28 minutes of suffering.” “For the other teams, of course,” Schoenhoff added. The E.V. Cain eighth graders beatOlympus for the FISAL championship last week to complete their own undefeated run through the league.
