COLFAX – It was all about defense and missed opportunities here Monday night for the Colfax and Placer High soccer teams. In an pivotal early season Pioneer Valley League match under the lights at MarsonStadium, the Falcons (1-1-1) and Hillmen (2-0-1) battled hot and heavy for 80 minutes but came away with nothing but a lot of expended energy in a 0-0 deadlock. “I think the strengths of both teams is the defenses,” said Colfax coach Jim Logan following the clean but hard fought played match. “We figured at halftime that one goal would probably be enough to win the match. Both teams had some shots but the defenses stepped up.” Colfax held a 20-12 shot advantage over the Hillmen on the evening and turned up the pressure in the game’s final eight minutes but Placer was able to withstand the Falcons’ push thanks to heady efforts from sophomore Nikolai Figueroa, Peter Kean, Gama Gomez, Erich Hernandez and goalie Patrick Dellwo. Colfax, meanwhile, received some steady defense of its own from its backline of Adam Allen, Josh Partin, Lukas Christenson and Taylor Dorsey. Colfax keeper Jeff Mulkin also came up with several fine saves. Placer’s best chance to score in the second half came with 15 minutes to play when Noah Daley’s shot from 15 yards out was just wide of goal. Another late Hillmen cross that seemed to elude Mulkin was aptly kicked away by Allen at the far post. The Falcons also missed a golden opportunity with five minutes left in the fray when a Ben Rooker corner kick ended in a shot fired by Cameron Ford that was headed away at the post by Hernandez. The Falcons and Hillmen are both chasing Lincoln which took a 2-0-0 PVL mark into Monday’s night match at Center. Colfax will play at Center Wednesday while Placer hosts Bear River under the lights at 7:00. Colfax JVs 5 Placer 3 – Alex Tobiasz and Scott Irons both scored second half goals to lead the Falcons past the Hillmen.
