Leal leads three Colfax boys on the podium while Placer’s O’Connor dominates girls competition

The Colfax High boys snowboard team shredded the competition Monday at a Central Division II race at Northstar. Junior Austin Leal led a 1-2-3 finish for the Falcons in the giant slalom race. Leal finished two runs in 2 minutes, 16 seconds to beat out senior teammate Danny Kern by three seconds for the individual title. Evan Kaiser raced to third place for Colfax. Placer senior Pete Porata took fourth to lead the Hillmen, who finished third as a team. Jacob Peek was 19th for Placer while Colton Davenport was 22nd in the competition, which featured 63 racers. Bear River’s James Leaman took 35th to lead the Bruins. Matt Baulkal was 43rd and Tyler Kline took 49th. Two-time state champion Caty O’Connor raced to first place by over 14 seconds to lead the Placer girls. The Hillgals’ senior was followed by Colfax freshman Nelly Steinhoff in second place. Placer junior Emma Obray was sixth and Olivia Pederson took 21st. Shelby Young took seventh for Colfax while Hailey Davidson raced to 10th. Bear River was led by Demi Ganser in 22nd. Kimber Otis took 30th and Haylee Bodner placed 35th for the Bruins. In the boys and girls combined scoring, Colfax beat out North Tahoe for first place while Placer finished third. In junior varsity boys action, Colfax’s Brennan Murphy and Brady Thomas were first and second, respectively. Placer’s Owen McCloskey took third and Kyler Ransom was sixth among 68 racers.
