Firefighters raising funds for kids

-A +A
Firefighters will be out to Fill the Boot this weekend. Cal Fire firefighters plan to be on the street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Auburn, Grass Valley and Truckee. The 3rd annual Fill the Boot fundraiser supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Jerry’s Kids, and donations go toward research for neuromuscular diseases, the clinic at UC Davis, summer camps and community education. In Auburn firefighters plan to be located at the intersection of Combie Road and West Hacienda Drive in the Lake of the Pines area. A second fundraiser is scheduled to take place at the intersection of Quartz Drive and Bell Road. Fill the Boot started in 1952 as a door-to-door canister drive that raised $5,000 to help pay the medical expenses of a child suffering from a neuromuscular disease. The fundraiser started as a partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Boston Fire Company. Cal Fire started working with the Fill the Boot program in 2008. ~Staff report
