Auburn’s Friends of the Volunteers have been passionately organizing events and raising money to support local volunteer groups for the past 30 years. Since 1977, the Friends’ club has been putting on luncheons, card parties, bus trips and other activities to help raise money for local groups such as Seniors First, a non-profit organization to help seniors stay independent. Friends’ president, Marcella Bane said the club has been working side by side with Seniors First for the past three years, “They can do Meals on Wheels and take people to the doctors that can’t drive,” Bane said. “When you get old, that’s really important.” Brenda Cathey, Meals on Wheels coordinator said Seniors First provides many resources for the elderly. “We provide door-to-door rides that take homebound seniors to the doctors, dentists and grocery store,” Cathey said. “We also have a friendly visitor program where people can come be a friend to seniors and go on walks with them and play games with them.” Seniors First serves all of Placer County. Cathey said they serve anyone that needs help whether they can pay or not. “All our services are donation based,” Cathey said. “If they can’t afford it we don’t turn anyone away.” Cathey said Meals on Wheels volunteers really appreciate all the work Friends of the Volunteers provide. “Friends help by doing different fundraisers throughout the year, like the annual card party,” Cathey said. “They come alongside us and do little projects to help continue and support the program.” The Friends meet the first Tuesday of the month from September to June. They gather at different members’ homes and enjoy a small meal, social time and guest speaker. Bane said it’s great way to meet people. “It’s fun and everyone seems to enjoy it,” Bane said. “It’s a nice group, really it is.” The Friends’ are looking for new members with the desire to help the elderly.
