High-speed pursuits just too risky

I feel something must be said regarding high-speed pursuits by law enforcement. The recent Foresthill incident involving a motorcycle and a CHP patrol car is a case in point (Journal, Sept. 9). It would seem to be a “no brainer” that such pursuits place other motorists and the general public at risk. Almost anything can happen under such panicky circumstances – if not the patrol car running into someone, then the driver of the vehicle being pursued losing control and causing a serious accident. Surely there must be a more sane and safe way to handle such situations. It is truly a wonder that more fatalities have not resulted from such incidents. The potential for miscalculations is always present with its possible tragic consequences. MARC W. DAVIS, Colfax
