Highway 49 crash victim remains in critical condition

A man critically injured after he reportedly stepped into Highway 49 and was struck by a car remained in hospital Tuesday. Claude Hiers, 47, of Auburn was in critical condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Robin Montgomery said. Hiers was admitted with major injuries suffered in the late-night collision June 15. Hiers, of no fixed address, was flown by helicopter to the hospital and has been in critical condition since being admitted. The California Highway Patrol reported that Hiers walked off the curb into the path of a Camry being driving at 35 mph about 100 yards north of the Dry Creek Road-Highway 49 crossroads. – Gus Thomson
