Hillgals roll to title in Jackson

The Placer High softball team reeled off four wins last weekend on its way to the championship at the Jackson Lions Club Dandelion Days Classic and improving to 10-2 on the season. The Hillgals doubled up Calaveras 6-3 in Saturday’s championship game. Freshman Kaelin Amrein pitched a complete game and struck out seven on her way to earning tournament MVP honors. Taylor Hill had two hits and two RBIs while Brooke Stufflebean and Kailey Gaffney also had two hits apiece. Kassidy Kosmata smacked a solo home run in the win. Placer knocked off Lincoln of Stockton 3-1 earlier on Saturday. Hill, Stufflebean and Amrein all had doubles. Abby Kendall added a hit and an RBI. Amrein pitched seven strong innings, fanning seven. In the tournament opener, Placer defeated host Argonaut 6-3. Amrein had three hits while Hill had two hits, including a double and two runs scored. Haley Tupen had one hit, two RBIs and two runs. Kosmata had a two-run double. In a 12-5 win over Rio Americano, Lori Schmitz led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Amrein had a double, two RBIs and two runs sored. Kosmata had a triple and an RBI while Hailey Leggitt, Jenna Knox, Jamie Schlenker, Gaffney and Tupen each had hits and RBIs. Knox pitched three innings and struck out two for the Hillgals. Hill and Tupen landed on the al-tournament team. Smith stars at Victory Tournament Del Oro High senior Whitney Smith had a huge week, including a breakout performance against the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champions. The Golden Eagles defeated Casa Roble 6-2 to conclude the Victory Sacramento Tournament on Saturday and Smith helped out by going 3-for-4 with two home runs. The Rams beat Del Oro for the section title last spring. For the week, Smith was 9-for-19 with three doubles and two homers as Del Oro posted a 4-0-2 record. Junior Carly Xeopoleas pitched six strong innings in the Eagles’ win over Casa Roble. Taylor Haynes had two hits and two steals. Bruins finish strong in Sacramento Bear River posted two wins Saturday to close out the Victory Sacramento Tournament. Bear River defeated McQueen 12-0 on Saturday as Maddi Phelps pitched the distance. Erin Nichol belted a home run, Alyssa Reina was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs while Stephanie Ceo was 2-for-3 with a triple. Mackenzie Hollister added a double. In a 7-1 win over Righetti, Reina was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Ceo was 2-for-2 with a solo homer and Cambria Holcomb was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Nichol pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts. On Friday in Sacramento, Bear River lost to Casa Roble 8-6 despite a home run and three RBIs from Ceo. Rachel Last had a grand slam to highlight a 10-9 loss to Whitney. Reina was 2-for-3 with a home run in a 9-2 loss to Ponderosa. Bear River is scheduled to face Vista Del Lago today in Folsom.
