Hillmen hold off Bruins

The Placer High baseball team belted out three hits to start the bottom of the first inning Wednesady afternoon at James Field, but the rest of the day wasn’t that easy for the Hillmen. Placer fought for a 4-3 win in a crucial early PVL tilt against visiting Bear River. Senior Matt Dougherty pitched four solid innings and junior Anthony Amara tossed three innings in relief to get the win for the Hillmen (3-2 overall, 2-0 PVL). Amara struck out three and gave up just two hits as he picked up his second win of the season. Senior Jordan Arndt sparked the Placer offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. Junior Josh Klem was 2-for-3 with one RBI and senior Joel Thys knocked in two runs. Senior shortstop Matt Ross came up with a pair of fems in the field to halt Bear River rallies. Senior Brandon Johnson was 3-for-3 to pace the Bruins (3-3, 1-2). Scott Runte was 2-fo-3 and A.J. Blashford went 2-for-4 for Bear River, which out-hit Placer 4-3. The Hillmen will host undefeated El Dorado Friday at 4 p.m. Golden Sierra 11, Encina 1 at Garden Valley — Nathan Kelleher-Crew and Cole Frey both belted home runs as the Grizzlies finished off the Bulldogs in six innings. Frey finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Kelleher-Crew also knocked in three. Siemens Kirby was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Giovanny Ramirez added a double as the Grizzlies improved to 1-1 in the Golden Empire League and 3-3 overall.
