The field at Colfax High School was the scene of a community in mourning this weekend, as the Colfax Jr. Falcons honored 12-year-old fallen team member Tyler Nickerson, who died tragically in Meadow Vista on Aug. 5.

With Kenny Chesney’s hit song “The Boys of Fall” as the vocal backdrop, 75 tearful players, cheerleaders and coaches from Nickerson’s Champion Junior Midget team wrote messages on balloons directed to their former friend and teammate before releasing them into a crystal-clear, foothill sky prior to the Jr. Midget opening-day game.

The game dedicated to Nickerson ended in a Colfax landslide victory over River City.

Each Jr. Midget player received a commemorative athletic shirt that read, “Nickerson #60 Forever A Falcon.”

Every football player and cheerleader in the program will wear a sticker displayed at every game on their helmet or uniform to honor Nickerson.

The Colfax Jr. Falcons have permanently retired Nickerson’s No. 60 jersey.

A Tyler Nickerson Memorial Fund has been established at U.S. Bank.

Nickerson was also an all-star player in the Sierra Foothills Little League, which has been instrumental in coordinating fundraising photo shirts and wristbands with all sales contributed to the memorial fund.
