Hornets rally past Aggies in closing seconds

SACRAMENTO — With 20 seconds left to play, Sacramento State junior receiver Brandyn Reed caught a 12-yard touchdown pass to beat UC Davis 31-28 Saturday. Reed caught seven passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a 2-yard run for the Hornets (5-6). The Hornets beat the Aggies for the second straight year in the annual Causeway Classic. “It’s great to go back and show people it wasn’t a fluke the first time,” said Hornets head coach Marshall Sperbeck. Quarterback Greg Denham completed 29-of-38 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns for the UC Davis Aggies (6-5). Nick Aprile had two rushing touchdowns for the Aggies. Aprile is a part-time defensive back that takes snaps out of the wildcat offense. Both of he scores were from the quarterback position. Chris Carter caught nine passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. His nine catches in the game secured the Aggies’ school record for most career receptions (213). Bakari Grant caught a 49-yard touchdown for the Aggies. After Grant’s touchdown catch in the fourth quarter increased the Aggies lead 28-17, the Hornets came back to cut the margin by three points on a 2-yard running score by Jake Croxdale. On their next possession, the Hornets marched 83 yards with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter to take the lead. With 14 seconds to go, the Hornets recovered a fumble by Carter to end the game. “We really wanted to get this one,” Carter said. “It was right there for us.”
