Jail the local BASE jumpers

Re: “Foresthill Bridge BASE leap caught by Placer sheriff’s copter,” (Journal, Dec. 9): I think the laws against BASE jumping are ineffective in stopping this type of activity. If BASE jumpers were put in jail for a minimum of 30 days upon conviction, BASE jumpers would think twice about putting themselves and our sheriff department personnel in jeopardy. Many people who parachute have turned to BASE jumping and now it’s a sport that is widely participated in. Current laws seem ineffective and don’t stop people from doing it. I think the laws against this sport should be enforced and have a bigger punishment if the authorities actually want to have an effect on (Aaron) McGovern and other BASE jumpers.
