LED motion sign could call for $60,000 in funding

The city of Auburn could decide Monday night to put $60,000 toward a new electronic sign. The Auburn Urban Development Authority is hearing a community presentation about a potential LED motion sign at the Maple Street exit off Interstate 80. According to city documents, if the authority is persuaded to move forward on the project, it could allocate $60,000 in redevelopment funds for the project. Auburn resident Virgil Traynor suggested the authority consider spending some of its funds on the project at a Jan. 24 meeting in which the authority discussed projects to fund before any potential state freeze of redevelopment monies. Currently the billboard at the Maple Street exit is non-motion and is rented out by not-for-profit organizations advertising upcoming events, according to the Auburn Chamber of Commerce. The Auburn Urban Development Authority meeting directly follows the Auburn City Council meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers at City Hall. ~Bridget Jones
