Letters reflect much incivility

Recently, I have noticed a distressing (and seemingly escalating) trend towards incivility in the tone of the letters to the editor printed by the Auburn Journal. I realize these letters draw attention and reaction because controversy “sells”, but printing letters where one citizen calls others “idiots” does not enlighten or inform readers ... it simply inflames emotions. Perhaps in the wake of Saturday’s horrible tragedy in Tucson, Ariz., the Auburn Journal can eschew sensationalism and instead help restore intelligence, illumination and thought to our local and national debates by resisting the impulse to print letters that spew insults and instead foster a respectful dialog that helps us understand each others’ points of view.
