A building contractor who expanded his expertise into selling and repairing power tools has opened a store in Auburn. Tony Lima, owner of Tundra Construction Inc., purchased The Tool Shed in Grass Valley in 2008 and in May started a second store near Dry Creek Road in North Auburn. Lima purchased The Tool Shed in Grass Valley when the original owners of the store retired. “It had been there since 1985,” he said Monday. Lima runs the Grass Valley shop and his wife, Madonna, oversees the Auburn location. Son, Tony Lima Jr., also helps in the business. Lima said he decided to open the Auburn store because he was seeing quite a few Auburn residents driving to Grass Valley to have tools repaired. “There’s no other repair facility between Auburn and Sacramento,” he said. “You have to go all the way to Rancho Cordova to find one.” The two stores specialize in power tools. “We’re a warranty service center for most of the brands of power tools,” he said. “We specialize in contractor-type tools and cordless tools.” There are also have a lot of accessories for power tools such as saw blades and batteries. With the down economy, Lima said he is seeing increased demand for repair instead of replacement of power tools. The store caters to building contractors as well as the do-it-yourself er homeowner. Colfax contractor Jeff Farrow has been shopping at The Tool Shed for a number of years. “I like it because it’s locally owned,” he said. “(Tony Lima) services what he sells, which is great. You can (special) order something and he takes the extra time to make sure everything is right if he does service work. I enjoy the personal service and quality when it comes to buying tools.” The latest trend in the industry is lithium power tools. “There are a lot of new products with lithium ion batteries for cordless tools,” Lima said. “The batteries last about three times as long as other batteries. The technology is much better.” He’s planning a grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Auburn store, that will include manufacturing representatives who will be displaying new products.
