An Auburn man is in custody on $750,000 bail for hate crime related charges. Lance Clements, 37, who reportedly has a long history of trouble with the law, was arrested Saturday by Auburn Police at his Flume Road home. Officer Stan Hamlin of the Auburn Police Department said Monday that Clements became involved in a March 6 dispute between schoolchildren from Alder Grove Academy and E.V. Cain Middle School. It was during the altercation in front of the Shell gas station on Highway 49 at Elm Avenue that Clements allegedly made racial slurs against a black student and a Hispanic student. One of the E.V. Cain students involved reportedly called his father (regarding a fight) who then allegedly called Clements, Hamlin said. Clements ends up saying he hates n------ and referred to himself as a KKK member. Clements reportedly pushed the black student and at some point pulled out a pocketknife. Through our investigation and an unrelated witness we were able to identify the suspect, Hamlin said. As of press time Monday Clements was in custody in the Placer County Jail. ” Penne Usher
