Name-calling brings chuckles

One of the most hilarious letters I ever read appeared in the Journal on March 11, written by Shawn Taylor of Foresthill. We’re still chuckling over his assumption “That people who shop at Wal-Mart are a bunch of white trash.” We’re huge Wal-Mart fans and have been shopping there for years. In my 83 years I have been called many names. “White trash” was never one of them. Evidently Taylor can afford Auburn’s “upscale” stores, and prices. We can’t. Those of us who live on fixed incomes greatly appreciate Wal-Mart. Also, Taylor cannot be a veteran. If he was, he would know that for many generic drugs that the VA charges $24 for a 90-day supply, Wal-Mart’s price is $10. Wal-Mart is also one of the few stores that offers jobs to seniors. I remember one of Oprah Winfrey’s shows where she went shopping at Wal-Mart for the very first time. She repeated saying how amazed she was at Wal-Mart’s huge selection, quality merchandise and low prices. I wonder if Oprah considers herself “white trash.” I’ve sent a copy of Taylor’s laughable letter to Oprah. STEVE T. CARLSON, Auburn
