Nurture seeds of democracy

To his credit, former President George W. Bush had a vision of democracy spreading to the Middle East and the Arab world free of kings and dictators. The problem is that many of these countries are our allies because of our dependence on oil and our economic interests in stability in the region. With the uprising in Tunisia, there is a ricochet effect spreading to other countries like Egypt and Yemen. We saw what happened in Iran with the green revolution and years ago in the square in China. But this is the 21st century and a globally connected community. Who could have dreamed of the probably unintended consequences the 26-year-old founder of Facebook may have started? President (Barack) Obama has always had a dream of a better world for all. As a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, his vision might, along with social media, usher in the 1,000 years of peace that is prophesied. The seeds of peace have been planted. As the most powerful nation in the world, we want these seeds to grow by working together at home and abroad and let nature and democracy take its course. CAROL WALLGREN, Auburn
