The icy, treacherous conditions at Mount Shasta didn’t keep Caty O’Connor and the Colfax High boys from stating their cases as the state’s best snowboarders Wednesday. O’Connor, a Placer High senior, coasted to victory in the giant slalom while the Falcons’ Austin Leal and Danny Kern made the top five at the California-Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation Championships. O’Connor is seeking a third individual overall state title. She was dominant Wednesday, winning on the slick GS course by a full eight seconds over second place. Her time was just over one second slower than the top boys time. Colfax, which boasts eight snowboarders at the two-day championships, got off to a strong start in the GS. Leal had a fantastic day, finishing in second place. Danny Kern placed fifth despite a nasty crash during a rail jam on Tuesday that left him with a chipped tooth. Nick Ash had a strong two runs for Colfax, taking 19th. Placer’s Colton Davenport raced to 20th place and Jacob Peek was 28th. Senior Pete Porata was disqualified Wednesday. On the girls side, freshman Nelly Steinhoff led the Falcons with a seventh place showing. Shelby Young raced to 31st and Hailey Davidson placed 39th. Junior Emma Obray had a strong showing for the Placer girls, taking 13th while Olivia Pederson was 36th in the field of 81 racers. Bear River’s Demi Ganster took 52nd and Kimberly Otis placed 68th. The Bruin boys were led by Matt Baukol, who placed 64th. James Leaman was 66th and Tyler Kline was 76th.
