A hard-fought battle between Placer High and Colfax came down to a one-shot penalty kick contest Wednesday night in Colfax. Dylan Day and Nigel Pell came up big for the Hillmen. Pell saved a Falcons’ penalty kick late in the second half and Day drilled a Placer penalty kick moments later to give the Hillmen a 1-0 victory in the Pioneer Valley League opener for both teams. “It was a great game to be a part of,” Placer coach Mark Miller said. “Both teams played really hard. Nigel Pell made a fantastic save. Our defense really played well.” Darren Centi, Clay Campbell, Matt Norcott and Nick Mitcell anchored the defense for the Hillmen (8-4-1 overall). Archie Warren drew the foul in the penalty box with 12 minutes remaining in the game to set up Day’s game-winner. Colfax coach Robert Ruzette commended the play of forward Steven Smith and midfielders Austin Oberg and David Lanthier. The Falcons fell to 5-6 overall. In junior varsity play Colfax beat Placer 2-0. Forest Lake 2, Sacramento Country Day 0 at Lake of the Pines — The Falcons rolled to a solid non-league win, using two first-half goals and steady defense.
