The Placer High baseball team will need to go the distance today to continue on its quest for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship. The Hillmen will send senior Ryan Mason to the mound today against Rodriguez at 4 p.m. at Dan McAuliffe Memorial Ballparks in Sacramento. Placer will take on Rodriguez in Game 2 of a best-of-three series. The Mustangs edged the Hillmen 3-2 on Saturday as Placer managed just six hits against Dylan Dumapay. Placer senior A.J. Sanchez allowed only five hits, but Rodriguez pushed two runs in the sixth inning and held off the Hillmen the rest of the way. Rodriguez (21-8) won the Solano County Athletic Conference title with a 13-2 record while Placer (19-8) took the Pioneer Valley League crown. Today, Placer will face the Mustangs? ace Jessie Scholtens. The 6-4, 210-pound right hander brings a 6-0 record and a 1.68 earned run average with him. Mason is a remarkable 8-0 with a 1.78 ERA on the year. In the other semifinal matchup, El Camino leads its series with Yuba City heading into today?s action. The section championship game is Monday at 3 p.m. at Sacramento City College.
