Taking a ride on a Placer County Transit bus is going to cost more starting July 1. New fares were approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors, including a 25 percent increase in the current $1 fare to $1.25. There is also a 20 percent jump – from 50 cents to 60 cents for seniors, the disabled and passengers ages 6 to 12. Will Garner, Placer County Transit official, said free transfers will no longer be issued. Transfers will be replaced with a 24-hour unlimited ride pass costing $2.50. That would allow a passenger taking a two-way trip to pay the same price as paying two separate fares, with a free transfer for each boarding, he said. The Department of Public Works asked for the fare increases to keep up with inflation and to help offset decreases in subsidies. Local sales-tax revenue decreases and a drop in state assistance has meant a loss of $350,000 in annual funding for Placer County Transit. – Gus Thomson
