Placer High School musical wins regional Elly Awards
By: Journal Staff Report
Four Elly Awards won by Placer High School’s musical “Into the Woods” provide more positive notes to a Placer High School spring tradition that attracts theater-goers of all ages. This year’s musical garnered 14 nominations for regional Elly Awards in Sacramento honoring theater excellence Sunday. The winners – all in the “Education Musical” category – were Connor Soejoto (leading actor); Alaina Smith (supporting actress); David Dwelle and Randy Nemeth (musical direction) and Joshua Brown (set design). Last year’s performances had a cast and crew of 20 Placer High students. There were eight shows in March and April. Brown, who served as director for “Into the Woods,” said the cast and crew all dressed up for the awards ceremony at Sacramento’s Crest Theater and enjoyed a chance to get together once again. “Everybody went crazy when Alaina Smith’s name was called,” Brown said. “She poured her heart and soul into her role and I couldn’t be more proud of her.” Brown praised the people who helped him win his own award by bringing his design drawings and ideas to life. That group included Pete Rameriz, Richard Alvez, Kyle Kavanaugh, Keith Smith, Miccie McNee, Steve Brown and Jessica Page.
