By: Journal Sports Staff
The Sac-Joaquin Section championship tennis match on Friday at Oak Park in Stockton took a little longer than most of Placer High?s matches this spring. The outcome was the same. Placer was the last team standing as the Hillmen brought home their fourth section title banner in six seasons in Division III with a 7-2 win over Escalon. Placer?s top two singles players ? Steven Fraguglia and Tine Hummel ? lost their respective matches Friday, but Placer prevailed in four matches that went three sets to secure its second straight section title. Blair Meyer took a 6-4, 7-6 (5) decision at No. 2 boys singles. Lindsay Holden rallied for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win in girls singles. Brendan Axelbaum and Andrew Carducci posted a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 boys doubles. Derek Ikeda and Andrew Dahlin held on for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 2. Kirstin Schauble and Claire McInerney won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 girls doubles. Tawny Thompson and Romy Behunova added a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2. In mixed doubles play, Jessie Fry and Kyle Fontes coasted to a 6-0, 6-2 win. The Placer tennis program has won 24 section titles between girls, boys and co-ed divisions.
