The poor don?t have lobbyists

As a former smoker, like a lot of former smokers, I am very grateful to have kicked that health hazard. Big tobacco is no better than the predatory lenders who caused the housing bubble. The rich got richer and the little guy got hurt. Proposition 29 for the $1 tax on cigarettes is a tax on the poor, the uneducated, the addicts and those without access to good health care. It is unfair to those groups, but big tobacco is the loser. The rich have stock in big tobacco and don?t care about the health costs. We can?t tax the rich, but it is easy to tax the poor, they don?t have a lobby. Even though it is unfair, a yes vote may cause some to give up the habit. CAROL WALLGREN, Auburn
