Reader Input: Draw a bead on nuke warheads

-A +A

The Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791 and reads as follows: “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
Folks, this was before we had a National Guard and relied on the single shot weapon for our collective security. We’ve gone back and forth on this until Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia changed 70 years of jurisprudence on this issue and conveniently left off the first part.
Does anyone really believe that we need AR-15s and 100-round magazines to protect us against a tyrannical government which has several million nuclear warheads at its disposal?
In addition, this amendment, as currently interpreted, would violate the Constitution’s treason clause, by allowing citizens to take up arms against the government.
The idiotic propaganda by the NRA regarding the president’s security detail for his children is stupid. If something were to happen to his children or any children of elected officials we would all be imperiled by potential blackmail, etc.
Again, the NRA was founded in the 19th century for firearm safety and promotion of arms for sport, but has turned into a gun lobby for the industry.
There are many well intentioned NRA members who don’t buy into this and need to take back the organization.
