Local residents helped raise $80,000 this weekend for continued cancer research and services. According to Katrina Sallagoity, chairwoman of the 2011 Relay for Life of Auburn, 29 teams participated in the event, with 300 residents involved, including cancer survivors. The money raised now goes to the American Cancer Society for its continued fight against cancer, Sallagoity said. According to Sallagoity, about $40,000 is expected to stay in Auburn for the program services the American Cancer Society offers in the area. “I think that the event was absolutely amazing and very successful,” Sallagoity said. “(Participants and attendees) were all very pleased with the event. They all had a great time, and they are all looking forward to next year’s Relay for Life event.” Sallagoity said the top team fundraiser this year was Mission Possible, raising close to $10,000. Manuel Feirra was the top individual fundraiser. The baby team award went to Team Tool and the spirit award went to Cruisin’ for Health. Sallagoity said the The Pyronauts’ and Holcomb Brothers Band’s live music also added a lot to the event. ~Bridget Jones
