Residents have a chance this weekend to turn out to cheer on cancer survivors and continuing local research. The 2011 Relay for Life of Auburn starts at 10 a.m. Saturday with its opening ceremony at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. The survivors lap is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Spectators and team members can remember those who passed away and honor those who have survived in the Luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. Saturday. The event is planned to wrap up at 10 a.m. Sunday with the Fight Back/closing ceremony. Katrina Sallagoity, Relay for Life of Auburn 2011 event chair, said those interested in registering for a team or as survivors can still do so Saturday, but it would best to sign up by 9 a.m. According to Sallagoity, there are no pets allowed at the event. Sallagoity said there are currently 28 teams signed up for the relay. “I’m really excited for the relay because I know what it’s going to do for the Auburn community for the future of fighting cancer.” ~Bridget Jones
