Alex Rump is ready for a change of scenery and life at a four-year school. He may even be throwing passes on ESPN later this year. After only one season quarterbacking the offense at Sierra College, the Colfax High graduate has decided to transfer to NCAA Division III powerhouse University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this fall. “I’m excited about the four-year experience, going away and doing my own thing for a little while,” Rump said. “I got a great year of junior college football under my belt.” Rump grey-shirted at Sierra after throwing for 2,792 yards and 30 touchdowns during his senior season at Colfax in 2006-07. He was the third-best quarterback in the Valley Conference last season, throwing for 1,697 yards and 20 touchdowns in leading the Wolverines to a 9-2 overall mark, a Valley Conference championship and a bowl appearance under head coach Jeff Tisdel. “Being the first year he competed we went through some growing pains, but I thought he handled everything very well,” Tisdel said. Rump, who carries a 3.8 GPA into his final semester at Sierra this spring, will compete with four other quarterbacks — including two expected transfers — for time in the shotgun this fall at UW-Whitewater. He’ll touch down in Wisconsin with three years of eligibility remaining. “I think it’s a great opportunity for him,” Tisdel said. “I’m sure that he felt that academically because he’s a very good student it would be in his best interest.” The Warhawks have appeared in the nationally televised Division III championship, the Stagg Bowl, in four straight seasons, winning in 2007 under then-first-year head coach Lance Leipold. They ranked second in attendance among more than 200 Division III schools last season, averaging more than 5,000 fans over seven home games. Whitewater, which doesn’t require an NLI to commit due to its division status, employs an offensive system similar to the one Rump thrived in at Colfax. “We’re a multiple inside outside zone running team,” said Leipold, who has been in contact with Rump since the final year of his offensive coordinator position at University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2006. “We utilize the shotgun and pistol formation a lot.” Rump likens many plays to those executed at Boise State. “I’m really excited to go there and just see what the whole atmosphere, lifestyle, football community is like there,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
