There are gophers in my garden nibbling at the roots of my vegetables. When I tamp them down in one bed they pop up in another. So it is with birthers (?Locals ask Sheriff to investigate president,? Journal, May 9). The truth tamps down one misconceived hypothesis and a new infestation springs up, pestering public officials and wasting tax dollars with ever more fantastical theories. The scope of conspiracy and complex fabrication required to sustain current birther plots is so wide that many of them would have trouble proving their own citizenship under the boundless rubric of their paranoia.
