Strong second half pushes Colfax past Bruins
After a slow start, the Colfax High girls soccer team picked up steam in the second half and went on to post a 4-0 Pioneer Valley League win at Bear River Monday afternoon.
“It took us awhile to get going today,” said Colfax coach Lefty Wilks. “We played a lot better in the second half.”
The victory for Colfax pushed their PVL record to 4-1 as the first half of league play was completed. Overall, Colfax is now 8-4-3 on the season.
Colfax grabbed a 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the match on a goal by Sam Melendez following an assist from Katy Thomas.
Hanging on to their slim 1-0 lead at halftime, the Lady Falcons finally broke loose in the second half with Melendez, Marissa Pontius, and Tori Henry all scoring goals. Credited with assists were Amber Tobiasz, Katie Garcia and Brittany Thomas.
According to Wilks, Brittany Thomas and Amanda Moore had strong defensive matches while Garcia, Katy Thomas and Pontius all had solid all-around efforts.
“When we finally got going we didn’t play too bad,” said Wilks. “We were able to create some space and distribute the ball a lot better in the second half.”
Colfax will host Lincoln to begin the second half of PVL action Wednesday at 4 p.m.
