Comb out your purple wig and dust off your glittery high heels – it’s time for a Sugar Plump Fairies party.

The “ArtRageous Dance Party” takes place Saturday night at the Auburn Masonic Hall, featuring food, music and the Fairies’ signature silliness.

This is the fifth annual fundraiser for the Fairies, who became a nonprofit organization just as many years ago. They’ve been a part of Auburn since 1997, cavorting at community events and making sure attendees have a good time while helping charities. Activities include ringing Salvation Army bells at Christmastime, helping the Auburn Education Foundation, raising funds for Relay for Life and the Red Cross and being highly visible participants at the Mandarin Festival, Auburn Symphony Kinderkonzert, Country Christmas, Festival of Lights and the Auburn Community Festival.

“We draw attention to ourselves for worthy causes,” explained founder Fran Haynes, AKA “Her Majesty.” She said the goal is to raise “fun and funds.”

Since becoming a nonprofit, the Fairies have funded more than $14,000 in arts programs for kids, including kindergarten art materials, visual and performing arts classes for the Auburn Recreation District, workshops and performances for the Auburn Hip Hop Congress and the Placer High School spring musical.

The spring event is the major annual fundraiser for the Fairies, and board member Beth Leydon said it started out as a prom for grownups and then was a costume ball last year.

“‘ArtRageous’ is the name our grant program, too,” Leydon said. “People are encouraged to dress ‘artrageously’ if they want, but they don’t have to.”

The dress code is described as “formal, funky or frivolous,” meaning anything goes, from costumes to street clothes. Past dance attendees have sported beehives and1950s prom dresses, animal suits and even a Jerry Garcia costume.

The evening will include a no-host bar, photo booth and silent auction. A Stone’s Throw will play classic rock, soul, funk and jazz, and the Fairies guarantee that there will be plenty of dancers out on the floor and certainly no shortage of fun – after all, that’s what the Fairies are all about.

“What happens at the ball stays at the ball,” Haynes smiled.
