Transient arrested for check fraud at Auburn bank

A 60-year-old transient man from Modesto was arrested Thursday for allegedly attempting check fraud at a Wells Fargo bank in Auburn.

At approximately 4:14 p.m., Auburn Police responded to the Wells Fargo in the Auburn Town Center on Elm Avenue for a check fraud report, according to a release issued by the department Friday afternoon.

The suspect, Robert Luther Thomas Sr., was still waiting in the bank lobby at the time of the call and officers arrested Thomas there.

Thomas Sr. allegedly entered the bank and attempted to pass a check for several thousand dollars written from a fraudulent checking account. Thomas was booked into Placer County Jail for burglary and forgery charges. As of Friday afternoon Thomas Sr. was in custody with bail set at $130,000.
