For more than two decades, it has been the place to go to add the bells and whistles to trucks and SUVs. Trucksmart, which is owned by three brothers — Todd, John and Jeff Brassfield — recently celebrated its 25th year in business. The Auburn store came first — in 1987. Then in 1991, the brothers opened a second location in Rocklin. Todd and Jeff Brassfield manage the Auburn store and John Brassfield runs the Rocklin site. The Brassfields lived in Seattle before relocating to the foothills. “We had all been in the automotive and truck aftermarket industry,” Todd Brassfield said recently. “Our parents lived in Newcastle so we located down here and set up the first store.” The stores offer a variety of truck and SUV accessories. Among the most popular add-ons are trailer hitches, bed liners and running boards. Trends in automobile accessories have evolved over the past two and a half decades. “Vehicles are changing more often and body styles are changing more often,” Brassfield said. “There’s a lot more to keep up on. People still outfit their trucks. That hasn’t changed. They enjoy fixing up their trucks and SUVs.” Tracking those trends is an important part of the job. “There are magazine publications that come out on a monthly basis and big trade shows we attend,” he said. “Those are the key ways.” One of the most popular requests is for sidebars. “Trucks are a lot taller than they used to be, so people need steps,” he said. “We sell lot of steps and a lot of trailer hitches.” Racks and toolboxes for trucks that are used for work are also big items, he said. Off-roading accessories, such as lift kits, are also part of the business. “We live in an area where off-roading is the best in the world with the Rubicon Trail and the Fordyce Trail up in the Sierra,” Brassfield said. One of the areas where he has seen the most changes is in suspension lifts. “Suspension lifts have gotten more complicated,” he said. “That’s very elaborate on new trucks.” Everything the store sells is installed on site. “We have a full shop in both stores,” he said. Trucksmart also works with local dealerships and body shops to install add-ons to newly purchased vehicles. At Magnussen’s Auburn Toyota, sales manager Andy Guerrero has worked with Trucksmart for 11 years. “They’re flexible and priced right. They are friendly and they are there for the customers,” Guerrero said. “They make things go as smoothly as possible and they are able to get things in a timely manner if they don’t have them (in stock), which helps us out a lot.” Brassfield’s favorite part of the business is interacting with customers. “I enjoy helping customers outfit their vehicles and enjoy dealing with the public,” he said. “There are customers that I’m selling stuff to their kids now. Parents started out and now their kids are my customers. I always thought that was kind of neat.” The Brassfields celebrated the milestone anniversary in mid-September with an open house in both stores. ------------ Trucksmart Where: 11844 Atwood Road, Auburn and 6455 Pacific St., Rocklin Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday Phone: (530) 888-7825 On the Web: www.trucksmart.com
