Union Pacific is preparing to close several Auburn-area roads at rail crossings in December. The closures will be made during a major roadbed, rail and railroad-tie replacement project that starts Dec. 3 at the Luther Road crossing. In all, work will close roads at 19 area crossings, including Auburn Ravine Road from Dec. 3 to 9, Agard Street near Placer High School from Dec. 4 to 9, Pleasant Street from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18 and Sacramento Street from Dec. 5 to 19. Union Pacific has been working with city of Auburn fire, police and public works departments to coordinate closure logistics and detours on streets as the work progresses. Fire Chief Mark D’Ambrogi said Tuesday that the city has been given enough time to develop contingency plans to deal with detours in case of emergency. For instance, instead of access to the residential area near the American River canyon normally accessible along Agard Street, emergency personnel would take little-used Virginia Street from the Robie Point area to access the Gold Street-Belmont Drive neighborhoods, he said. “We’ve been in contact with Union Pacific from the get-go,” D’Ambrogi said. “The real key is coordination and communication over any limitations placed on us.” The Luther Road crossing work will take place Dec. 3 to 9 and would put fire stations on the wrong side of the closure in some emergency situations. D’Ambrogi said mutual aid agreements with Placer County Fire will ensure that emergency personnel will arrive as quickly as possible. Union Pacific is promising that the replacement work should leave Auburn and its environs with a quieter railroad. New concrete ties will be installed at all crossings with concrete crossing pads that are welded together on the ends. A statement from Reno’s RoadSafe Traffic Systems for Union Pacific says the welding and concrete work will result in a smoother crossing surface and eliminate existing rough crossing areas for vehicle traffic. Additionally, existing asphalt on the approaches to rail crossings will be cut back eight feet and new asphalt will be put down. RoadSafe said that will provide a smoother approach at crossings.
