WWII military included gays

This letter is in regards to the debate over the gays in the military. I agree with Chuck Huber in his letter in the Dec. 7 issue of the Auburn Journal. I was in the submarine service during World War II and we had an electrician mate aboard who was gay. As a close-knit crew, everyone knew that he was gay. When things got exciting he didn’t run and hide. He carried his share of the load like everyone else. The character of a person is determined by the compassion that he has for his fellow man, not by the color of his skin or his orientation. Frank E. Ziegelmann, Colfax
