A wildland fire burning Friday near Dobbins in Yuba County about 30 miles northwest of Auburn was creating a plume of smoke visible in many areas of the Placer County community. The fire was first reported to CalFire just before 1 p.m. and had spread to 100 acres in the Lake Francis Road area by 3 p.m. Another smaller fire on nearby Yuba Nevada Road had scorched 30 acres and was still burning. Twenty homes in the Lake Francis Road were being evacuated and firefighters were attempting to protect them from the oncoming fire. In the air, CalFire was employing four air tankers and two helicopter bucket rigs to help battle the blaze. Power lines were also threatened, a CalFire spokesman said. – Gus Thomson
