Colfax High tennis star Heidi Graves will get another shot at Katy Brayton in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III singles championships.

Graves breezed through her first matches Thursday to advance to today’s semifinals at Oak Park. She’ll play Brayton, the Escalon ace who beat Graves 6-2, 6-3 in last year’s section final.

Graves beat Modesto Christian’s Emily Repsher 6-0, 6-0 in the first round before downing Golden Empire League champion Choua Thao of Lindhurst, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Modesto Christian’s Presli Pioti beat Colfax ace Kari Zajac 6-4, 7-5.

In boys doubles action, Colfax’s Justin Witt and Josh Parker advanced to today’s semifinal, where they will play Chue and Ger Xiong of Marysville. Witt beat the same Marysville pair Tuesday with another Colfax partner, 7-6, 6-3.

Witt and Parker beat Central Catholic’s duo of John Styner and Alex Vient 6-2, 7-5 before downing River City’s Chris Salazar and Doug Tiptio, 6-7 (10-8), 6-3, 6-2.

Placer also advanced all of its qualifiers to today’s section semifinals.

None of the Hillmen worked harder to get there than Dan Fraguglia.

Fraguglia won a three-and-a-half hour affair with his Marysville opponent, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 that included a 156-ball rally.

He then beat his Dixon opponent in a 20-minute quarterfinal, 6-0, 6-0.

Hannah Dobbas and Marissa Rodriguez beat River City 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and Escalon 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Andy Riggs beat his San Juan opponent 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals after a first-round bye.

Cameron McCallister and Yannic Pfisterer beat Rio Linda 6-2, 6-1 after a first-round bye.

Meredith Ivancie and Dan Ragusano also had a first-round bye before beating a duo from Escalon, 6-0, 6-2.

Forest Lake Christian’s lone qualifiers, GEL doubles champions Caitlin Hanson and Jen Menary, beat Summerville 6-3, 6-2 in the first round before losing a quarterfinal heartbreaker to Central Catholic.

Hanson and Menary lost the first set 2-6, won the second 6-3 and led 5-1 in the third before Central rallied back to take the set 7-5 and win the match.

“Those two sophomores fought their hearts out,” head coach Steve Robinson said of Hanson and Menary. “It’s a great experience for these two players. Those Central Catholic girls picked it up and made a tough comeback.”
